... een verkennende wandeling - une ballade-découverte - a discovering walk
Omdat we in de late namiddag zijn toegekomen beslissen we ons te beperken tot een kleine verkenning van het oude stadsdeel, dat vrij dicht bij ons hotel ligt. Het is vrijdagavond en Padova lijkt ons dan ook onmiddelijk een erg levendige stad: de ontspannen sfeer maakt dat we ons snel thuis voelen in deze cultuur- en kunststad waar sterke religieuze beleving en studentikoze sfeer samenleven.
Comme nous sommes arrivés en fin d'après-midi nous décidons de nous limiter à une petite ballade de reconnaissance dans la Vieille ville, assez proche de notre hôtel. En ce vendredi soir Padoue nous apparaît rapidement comme une cité très vivante; l'atmosphère décontractée fait que nous nous sentons rapidement à l'aise dans cette ville d'art et de culture où cohabitent ferveur religieuse et ambiance estudiantine.
Since we arrived in the late afternoon we decide to limit ourselves to a short walk to discover the old town, rather close to our hotel. On this Friday evening Padova seems rapidly to be a very lively city: the relaxed atmosphere makes us feeling in no time comfortable in this city of Art and Culture where religious fervour lives together with the jaunty way of life of the students of this ancient university.

Langs de Piazzale Pontecorvo komen we vrij makkelijk uit bij een van de meest belangrijke gebouwen van Padova: de Basilica del Santo, bedevaartplaats ter ere van Sint Antonius van wie het graf in deze kerk ligt. Het zijn niet alleen de talrijke ex-voto's, smeekbeden van allerlei aard en bedankingen die onze aandacht trekken, we zijn vooral verrast door de talrijke gelovigen die op dit late uur het marmer van de graftombe komen kussen, zich ingetogen tussen de menigte in een stille dialoog met de heilige afzonderen, neerknielen, een haastig gebed prevelen, terwijl bezoekers voorbijlopen, een snelle blik toewerpend. Op de Piazza Cavour heerst een weekend drukte en op de Piazza delle Erbe, aan de voet van het prachtig gerestaureerde Palazzo della Ragione, komt een verscheiden publiek proeven van de sympathieke sfeer. Het is hier goed uikijken om een plaats te bemachtigen op een van de terrassen waar vooral het jonge studentenvolk van deze oude en beroemde universiteitsstad heerst. We laten ons verleiden door een glas witte pinot wijn uit de Friuli. Later, eerder toevallig, bevinden we ons na wat ronddwalen voor de Antica Osteria Dal Capo, een eerder klein restaurant met een goede reputatie bij de Padovanen, zoals we zullen vernemen. Vriendelijk krijgen we de laatste vrije tafel toewezen; de gerechten smaken heerlijk in deze leuk ontspannen sfeer. Ook als we naar ons hotel terugkeren zullen we de vriendelijkheid kunnen waarderen van voorbijgangers die ons ervoor behoeden een al te grote omweg te maken!
Passant par la Piazzale Pontecorvo nous trouvons aisément un des édifices les plus importants de Padoue: la Basilica del Santo, lieu de pèlerinage dédié à Saint Antoine dont le tombeau se trouve dans cette église; ce ne sont pas seulement les très nombreux ex-voto, supplications en tous genres et remerciements pour les implorations exaucées qui attirent notre attention, nous sommes surtout surpris par le nombres de fidèles qui à cette heure tardive viennent baiser le marbre de la sépulture et se recueillent, se prosternent, marmonnent une rapide prière ou semblent s'isoler dans un dialogue silencieux avec le saint, alors que des visiteurs passent jetant un regard furtif. En gagnant la Place Cavour nous retrouvons l'ambiance d'une fin de semaine. Sur la Piazza delle Erbe, en contre-bas du Palazzo della Ragione, règne une animation sympathique alors que les nombreuses terrasses accueillent une foule bigarrée - en majorité jeune, estudiantine, ancienne et célèbre ville universitaire oblige. Nous nous laissons tenter par un verre de pinot blanc du Frioul. Puis fortuitement nous nous trouvons par la faveur de quelques déambulations devant l'Antica Osteria Dal Capo, petit restaurant de bonne réputation auprès des Padouans comme nous apprendrons ultérieurement. Nous y occuperons la dernière table libre pour un repas bien savoureux dans une atmosphère décontractée. Ce soir, nous apprécierons également, par deux fois, l'amabilité de passants qui nous épargneront un trop grand détour pour retrouver notre hôtel!
Passing by Piazzale Pontecorvo we find easily one of the most important monuments of Padova: the Basilica del Santo, place of pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Antonius whose grave is in this church; not only the very numerous ex-votos, the supplications of any kinds and thanks for the granted pleas are drawing our attention, we are particularly surprised by the number of religious people who at the late hour come to kiss the marble of the grave and to meditate, prostrate, mutter a short prayer or seem being isolated in a silent dialogue with the saint, while visitors pass throwing a furtive glance. When arriving at the Piazza Cavour we find back the lively atmosphere of a weekend. On the Piazza delle Erbe, under the Palazzo della Ragione, reigns a nice animation: the numerous terraces welcome a miscellaneous crowd - for the greater part young people, students of this ancient and famous university. We let us tempt by a glass of white pinot wine from the Friouli. Later by the favour of a stroll we find the Antica Osteria Dal Capo, a rather small restaurant but very well known by the Padovans as we'll hear. We get the last free table for a very delicious meal in a well relaxed atmosphere. In the late evening, we shall also appreciate, twice, the kindness of passers-by to prevent us from a too big bend when returning to our hotel!

Als kunststad bezit Padova een van de meesterwerken van het Quattrocento. In het begin van de XIVe eeuw versiert Giotto de capella degli Scrovegni: het aanschouwen van deze indringend mooie fresco's wordt het hoogtepunt van ons kort verblijf in Padova. Maar de Eremitaniwijk biedt nog twee andere belangrijke bezienswaardigheden: de Chiesa degli Eremitani en het Museo Civico. We gaan dus al vrij vroeg na he ontbijt-buffet op stap voor deze beloftevolle dag.
Padoue ville d'art renferme dans ses murs un des chef-d'oeuvre du Quattrocento: Giotto décore en ce début du XIVe siècle la chapelle des Scrovegni. Le spectacle de cet ensemble de fresques d'une impressionnante beauté sera le point d'orgue de notre visite. Mais le quartier des Eremitani nous offrira également deux autres points de grand intérêt: la Chiesa degli Eremitani et le Museo Civico. C'est donc tout naturellement qu'après le petit-déjeuner nous partons pour une journée qui s'avère particulièrement prometteuse.
Padova, city of Art, keeps in its walls one of the masterpieces of the Quattrocento: Giotto decorates in the early XIVth century the Scrovegni chapel . The scenery of this set of frescoes of an impressing beauty will be the acme of our visit. But the Eremitani area will also offer two other sights of big interest: the Chiesa degli Eremitani and the Museo Civico. That's why, after breakfast, we are already on the way in the early morning for a day which seems particularly promising.

Deze 13e eeuwse kerk in Romaanse bouwstijl werd helemaal opnieuw gebouwd na de heel belangrijk vernietigingen door de Duitse bombardementen van 1944. De fragmenten van de prachtige fresco's ( o.m. van Mantega en Guariento ) evenals andere gespaarde delen werden in de heropbouw geïntegreerd.

Om dit meesterwerk van Giotto te beschermen wordt sinds de laatste restauratie een erg strikte procedure voor het bezoek gevolgd: 1. verplichting tot reserveren van het bezoek ( hetzij bij de ticketverkoop of on-lineCappella degli Scrovegni, wat wij vanuit België deden 13 euro, verschillende kortingen en formules, zie ook www.padovacard.it) 2. maximaal 25 bezoekers zijn toegelaten gelijktijdig in de kapel te vertoeven 3. na het betreden van een eerste airco sas, wonen de bezoekers een 15' durende videofilm bij over de geschiedenis van de kapel ( terwijl de vorige groep de kapel bezoekt) 4. daarna betreedt men de kapel onder begeleiding van een gids via een tweede sas voor een bezoek dat eveneens tot 15' is beperkt.

Pour préserver ce chef-d'oeuvre de Giotto, depuis la dernière restauration une procédure de visite très stricte est observée: 1. obligation de réserver la visite ( à la billetterie ou en ligne Cappella degli Scrovegni , ce que nous avons fait de Belgique, 13 euro, diverses réductions et formules, également www.padovacard.it) 2. un maximum de 25 visiteurs sont autorisés à se trouver simultanément dans la chapelle 3. après l'entrée dans un premier sas climatisé, les visiteurs assistent à la projection d'un vidéo-film de présentation de 15'( alors que le groupe précédent visite la chapelle) 4. puis par un deuxième sas on pénètre accompagné d'un guide dans la chapelle pour la visite qui aussi est limitée à 15'.
To protect this masterpiece by Giotto, since the last restoration a very strict procedure for the visits is observed: 1. Obligation to reserve the visit (at the ticket office or on-line Cappella degli Scrovegni, what we did from Belgium, 13 euro, diverse reductions and combinations, see also www.padovacard.it) 2. A maximum of 25 visitors are authorized to be simultaneously in the chapel 3. After the entrance(entry) to a first air-conditioned sieve(airlock), the visitors attend the projection of a video-movie of presentation(display) of 15 ' (while the previous group visits the chapel) 4. Then by the second sieve(airlock) we penetrate accompanied with a guide in the chapel for the visit which also is limited to 15'.

Gebouwd door de familie Scrovegni in 1303, wordt de kapel versierd door Giotto met 39 fresco's die de muren en het gewelf bedekken. We bewonderen de voorstellingen uit het Leven van Christus, het Leven van de Heilige Maagd, het Leven van Joachim en Anna, van het Laatste Oordeel, van de Deugd en de Ondeugd ... Aangezien fotograferen verboden is nemen we een foto van het informatiepaneel op de Piazza, bij de ingang ( tassen moeten aan de vestiaire worden afgegeven ) Toute photographie étant évidemment interdite, nous prenons une photo du panneau d'information de la Piazza à l'entrée de la billetterie ( tout sac sera déposé au vestiaire )

Museo Civico
Na de Capella degli Scrovegni bezoeken we met hetzelfde ticket het erg uitgebreide Museo civico dat in het vroegere, mooi gerestaureerde Klooster van de Eremitani di San Antonio is gevestigd en dat eigenlijk uit twee musea - als het er geen drie zijn! - bestaat. We hebben er meer dan drie uur vertoefd: eerst, in het Museo Archeologico, vondsten en schatten (vooral) uit het paleo-Veneto tot de (laat-)Romeinse tijd, zonder dat Egypte en de Etrusken er afwezig zijn. Dan, in het tweede museum, het Museo d'Arte, in een chronologische presentatie, een heel grote collectie schilderijen en beelden van kunstenaars uit de 14e tot de 18e eeuw. Naast de prominente aanwezigheid van grote Italiaanse meesters - Giotto, Titiaan, Veronese, Tintoretto en Tiepolo - zijn er ook talrijke werken van Vlaamse en Hollandse schilders.
Après la Capella degli Scrovegni nous visitons - avec le même ticket - le Museo civico situé dans l'ancien Monastère des Eremitani di San Antonio, restauré et qui se compose en fait de deux musées - ou faut-il dire trois tant il est étendu! Nous y sommes restés plus de trois heures, impressionnés par la richesse des collections: le Musée Archéologique avec ses salles consacrées en majorité du paleo-Veneto à la fin de l'époque romaine, sans que l'Egypte et les Etrusques en soient absents, puis le Musée d'art médiéval et moderne qui présente, chronologiquement du XIVe au XVIIIe siècle, non seulement de très nombreuses oeuvres de peinture et de sculpture de maîtres italiens parmi lesquels Giotto, Titien, Véronèse, Le Tintoret et Tiépolo mais également des oeuvres de maîtres de la peinture flamande et hollandaise.
After the Capella degli Scrovegni we visit - with the same ticket - the very large Museo civico located in the ancient and nicely restored Monastery of the Eremitani di San Antonio. In fact it consists of two museums - if not three! We spent there more than three hours: first on, in the Museo Archeologico, findings (mainly) from the paleo-Veneto till the (late) Roman period, without the absence of Egypt and the Etruscans Then, in the second museum, the Museo d'Arte, we admire, by a chronological presentation, a very extended collection paintings and sculptures from artists from the XIVth to XVIIIth century. Besides the prominent presence of great Italian masters - Giotto, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto and Tiepolo - there are also numerous painters of the Flemish and Holland schools.

Dit Alzo met mooie monumentale trap huisvest het Museum voor toegepaste en decoratieve kunst en het Boottrein Museum. Mooie meubelstukken, schilderijen, huisraad, porselein, en ook een numismatische collectie ( toegang begrepen in het basisticket van de Capella degel Schreven ). Het Alzo (1912-1914) is een voorbeeld van de nieuwe burgerlijke bouwstijl op het einde van de XIX e en begin XX eeuw.

Maar de charme van Padova is ook de animatie op de talrijke pleinen; Piazza Cavour, Piazza del Duomo, Piazza del Santo, Piazza Eremitani, Piazza Capitiniato, del Duomo - op sommigen worden markten gehouden, zoals op de Piazza della fruta ( waar we onder een staalblauwe hemel en bij een warme lentezon lunchen, een erg smakelijke, rijk gevarieerde Insalata en heerlijke licht met citroen geparfumeerde aardbeien ), de Piazza delle Erbe, de Piazza dei Signori . En dan is er - zoals veelal in Italië - het leuke slenteren en dwalen door straten, steegjes en pleintjes, soms voorbehouden aan uitsluitend voor voetgangers, anderen waar (verrassend talrijke) fietsers gedoemd zijn tot kunstige slaloms. Mooie winkels, prestigieuze handelszaken rond de piazza Cavour, elegante of charmante boetieks, originele of verrassende, aantrekkelijke, andere sober, ernstig, streng, maar steeds zijn ze om een of andere reden,bevallig. We laten ons verleiden in een dolce farniente rondwalend bij een terrasje waar we genieten van een cappuccino. Terugkeer naar ons hotel voor een weldoende douche die de vermoeidheid van de dag verdrijft die ons ongemerkt overviel.
Mais le charme de Padoue c'est aussi l'animation sur les nombreuses places; Piazza Cavour, Piazza del Duomo, Piazza del Santo, Piazza Eremitani, Piazza Capitiniato, del Duomo - certaines où se tiennent les marchés, comme sur la Piazza della fruta ( où sous un beau soleil nous déjeunerons d'une riche Insalata et de succulentes fraises au citron ), la Piazza delle Erbe, la Piazza dei Signori. Et puis il y a - comme si souvent en Italie - ce plaisir de déambuler par les rues et ruelles réservées aux piétons - d'autres où les cyclistes (étonnamment nombreux) sont contraints à l'art du slalom. Beaux magasins, enseignes prestigieuses des environs de la place Cavour, boutiques tantôt élégantes, tantôt charmantes, originales, surprenantes, attrayantes, aguichantes parfois, d'autres encore, austères, mais toujours plaisantes, intéressantes: nous nous laissons séduire sillonnant les quartiers par dolce farniente avant de nous asseoir à une terrasse pour déguster un cappuccino. Retour à notre hôtel pour une douche bienfaisante qui élimine la fatigue de la journée qui imperceptiblement nous guettait.
But the charm of Padova is also the lively atmosphere on the numerous squares; Piazza Cavour, Piazza del Duomo, Piazza del Santo, Piazza Eremitani, Piazza Capitiniato, - on some where markets take place like Piazza della fruta (where, under a bleu sky and a nice sun we order for lunch a rich tasteful Insalata and delicious strawberries perfumed with a zest of lemon), Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza dei Signori. And then there is - as if often in Italy - the pleasure of strolling by streets and alleys the ones reserved for pedestrians - others where (surprising numerous) cyclists have to practice the art of the slalom. Prestigious brands, beautiful stores, around the piazza Cavour, elegant shops, charming, original, surprising, attractive, enticing boutiques, also severe, austere shops but always for one or an other reason, pleasant, interesting. We let us seduced walking by dolce farniente before enjoying a cappuccino on a terrace. Back to our hotel for a nice, beneficial shower eliminating the fatigue of the day which imperceptibly was watching us.

Als aperitivo genieten we van de leuke drukte op de Piazza delle Erbe, bij een lekker glas fruitige witte wijn met lichte vanille parfum. Cucina regionale, venete e siciliane: wij gaan bij Donna Irene eten, een wel erg verzorgde tafel, die we als eerder eenvoudig hadden ingeschat maar die ons erg aangenaam verrast .

... en 's anderendaags rijden we in de vroege ochtend naar Venetië waar we de ferry naar Griekenland nemen !
... et le lendemain tôt nous partons pour Venise où nous prenons le ferry pour la Grèce !
... and the next day in the early morning we are on the way to Venice where we get the ferryboat to Greece!
